Gestational Diabetes, General Anemia and a Breech Babe

We saw our OB yesterday and got an update on the whole situation.

GD:

The nurse asked if the Diabetes clinic could see us yesterday but they were busy. Instead they gave me a website to check out and will call me next week for an appointment. SO here's what I know:

My OB isn't super concerned. She used the words "borderline" and "barely" when talking about my test results. It's just a precaution and she is required to send me by AHS regulations. No big. I stopped drinking pop and am working on a grocery list for next week based on the diet plan on the website.

But here's the thing. The diet plan seems ridiculous to me. There is one vegetable serving the whole day but like 8 glasses of milk. I thought the point was to not spike your blood sugar? And one vegetable? Give me a freaking break. You can tell these diet plans are paid for by the dairy & meat associations in our province (we don't grow vegetables unless you count corn but I'm pretty sure it's a starch). Anyway, I'm thinking... loosely follow it. I'm not cutting out vegetable servings. That seems stupid to me. And I don't drink milk, haven't since I was about 6 and I don't plan to start any time soon.

I think I'm going to get some Vega One and do protein smoothies in the morning with a fruit (as per the diet, granted they recommended toast, eggs, fruit and coffee...who can eat that much in their third trimester!?). It's an easy breakfast I'll probably keep down. From there I'm kinda confused. I was thinking salads for lunch (they recommend sandwiches with fruit and coffee), meat with starch and veggies for dinner. Snacks they recommend MUFFINS and CRACKERS. I'm confused again, muffins are pretty much cake, bro.

Plus there is zero way I could eat three meals plus three snacks without getting sick twice a day. It's just not happening. So I'm definitely going to need to modify it a little bit. Right now I'm lucky if I do two meals and one snack a day. I'm so full and sick all the time.

Anemia:
Basically, no changes. I'm already taking 180mg of iron a day and there isn't much more we can do (unless I never want to poop again). She recommended taking my prenatal separately to see if the calcium in it is the culprit but there's no guarantee that will help. In 6 months of taking it my iron has gone from 6 to 8 and they want it over 15 so I'm thinking that won't happen before Ellie.

I was looking into placenta encapsulation. It could help with the anemia post pregnancy but with our current employment status I'm thinking nah. Hopefully it changes soon and we can re-evaluate.

Luckily, my thyroid works!

Ellie:
Baby is "bazackwards" as the nurse said. What I thought was a head butting my cervix was in fact a butt (and maybe some legs). She's still head up. She's somewhere in here:

She was frank breech at our last ultrasound and may be footling now. Either way, babe needs to turn head down. We are hoping sooner rather than later due to my UU. My doc said we will keep an eye on it and may have to schedule a c-section.

My thoughts? Well if we have to do one, okay. and if we do I've heard it's a lot better to do a scheduled section rather than an emergency one so if it looks like that's the way it's going I'd rather schedule one. But here's hoping she flips in the next 6 weeks or so! We have time and I'm glad my doctor is taking the "wait and see" approach instead of pushing me into a c-section now.

  3. I think that protein and fat can slow down absorption of sugars, so they may recommend milk to help keep things evened out, but 8 glasses a day? Are they kidding? That's insane. Muffins with lots of fiber also can change the absorption rate of sugars, but not the muffins that are generally floating around at your neighborhood coffee shops. I hope baby Ellie turns head down for you soon so that you can avoid a C-section (especially if you iron is already low). C'mon, Ellie! Help your poor mama out! Maybe she'll be a super-chill, awesome sleeping newborn to make up for all that she's put you through during pregnancy. :)
