TTC Wednesday: Au revoir, gluten. It's been a blast.

I've been meeting with my doctor on and off for the past year to figure out the best way to manage my PCOS and get pregnant. In the mean time, we've both been doing research on our own and bringing what we can to the table. (Did I mention my GP is amazing? I love her so much). The reality is there are a lot of diet changes I still need to make. PCOS doesn't affect everyone in the same way so it was hard to say which I needed to make to start out. Plus, I felt whiny and just blamed my weight on my PCOS and ignored the other factors.

At it's core PCOS is a hormonal imbalance that leads to (in my case) weight gain, cystic acne, infertility and some weird chin hairs that grow at an alarming rate. And cysts on my ovaries. There are a lot of foods (gluten, dairy, sugar) that can trigger further imbalances or increase these symptoms. So far, no PCOS cure or medication (just medication to improve fertility but it doesn't actually get rid of PCOS, just kinda works around it). I did see a huge reduction in symptoms when I was on birth control, which is normal, and I had an easier time losing weight on it. However, you can't really use birth control to get pregnant.

One of recurring themes I saw was a diet change. I tried just cutting my calories and working out but I didn't really see results past my initial fiveish pounds and that always climbed back up eventually. It's really hard to say you are trying to lose weight when you aren't actually losing weight. This diet change doesn't need to be calorie reduced (unless you want to really lose weight) but it's basically a giant overhaul. Low sugar, low dairy, low fat. And potentially gluten-free.

We decided to get my blood tested and I came back on the cusp of what would be considered celiac. I'm likely just gluten sensitive but we agreed I'd benefit from a gluten free diet overall. The good news is, I can still eat a lot of the things I like and I can still eat at a lot of the places I like, just gluten free. I don't have to worry if my bun touches a normal bun, I should be fine. I'm basically going to cut out gluten for the remainder of December completely and then she said I could try adding some stuff back in to see how it affects me.

Someone have some fettuccine alfredo for dinner for me. With garlic cheese toast. k? I did make some gluten free raspberry chocolate chip muffins on Sunday night that I have been having for snacks every day this week. They are pretty good! I would like to eventually make my own completely but I'm going to start with using the box mix cos it works and it's good. They are a little crumbly, especially a few days later but the taste is good and that's probably the most important. Steve liked them too which is always a win. I am going to make some with egg replacer and vegan chocolate chips for Carla this weekend.

I used the Glutino brand mix and added in a cup of fresh raspberries and a cup of mini chocolate chips. I smushed some of the raspberries and swirled them through the batter and left the rest whole.
Are any of you gluten free or have gluten free recipes/recommendations? Send them my way!

  1. I was told I needed to lose 40 lbs to do IVF almost two years ago. The only thing that worked for me was some kind of class EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Now I do a combo of boot camp, yoga, pilates, Zumba classes almost every day. It was also the only (productive) way I had to deal with infertility. And I felt like I was actually doing something about it.
